Geraldine Songao
I reside on Saipan, where I was born and raised. ASL is my third language (Chamorro is my first language and English is my second). I had taken sign language courses at Northern Marianas College. At first, I had chosen Intro. to ASL out of curiosity. Then I met Deaf adults and had an awesome mentor. I got hooked on signing. In the spring of 2002, I was hired as a sign language tutor (under the work-study program). I worked with elementary students from the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing program, ages five to eight, on Saipan. In the duration of working in elementary, I had gone to Tinian once a week to interpret for a year. I also volunteered to work with an early intervention program (CDAC) teacher to support and teach a hard-of-hearing child and a parent to sign. Now, I am working with one deaf student at a local high school. This school year would mark my third year at the high school level. I have taken many sign language courses.
